The Toyota and Mazda brands, viewed head-to-head, have a rivalry that stretches back decades that's matured into occasional collaboration. It's a David-versus-Goliath matchup, and every so often the little guy gets the upper hand. That's what we find when we compare the 2017 Toyota RAV4 and the 2017 Mazda CX-5. Here's a closer look from Heritage Mazda Catonsville.

2017 Mazda CX-5

Even if we weren't an Ellicott City, MD area Mazda dealership, we'd still have to like the 2017 Mazda CX-5. Its refreshed exterior design gives a visual counterpoint to the fun drive you get from the powerful engine. The interior, meantime, doesn't just look good. It feels right, and boasts better-than-average materials and construction throughout.

That's part of the company's philosophy of putting the driver first. You find evidence in other unexpected places as well, including an innovative heads-up display that gives you system status and other vital information while cutting down on distracted driving. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported (they're not in the Toyota RAV4, which uses a proprietary app ecosystem).

Both of our competitors get an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ thanks to advanced active safety features.

2017 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 literally invented the crossover segment. It's versatile, practical, and popular. However, its current generation has been plugging along since 2013, and it's starting to look and feel a bit long in the tooth.

Peer beneath the hood and you'll see other disadvantages. The powertrain is less-powerful than the Mazda CX-5 (see sidebar), and also falls behind in terms of fuel economy.

The interior layout is something of a toss-up. If it's cargo volume you're after, the Toyota RAV4 comes out on top. The Mazda CX-5 allocates its space a bit differently, prioritizing rear seat passenger space over cargo volume. If you're keeping the seats up most of the time (and most of us do), the difference is negligible. Otherwise, it comes down to deciding whether you're going to be spending more time hauling stuff or moving people.
