Here at Heritage Mazda Catonsville, we spend most of our time talking about the present generation of Mazda vehicles, as well as future innovations. But we also firmly believe that in order to understand a vehicle in its current state, you have to understand its history and where it came from. One of the most storied Mazda cars on our lot is the Mazda MX-5 Miata. This two-door, two-seat roadster has garnered considerable acclaim for its affordability, sporty drive, and sense of style. Here’s a brief history of how this much-loved car got to where it is today.
The Mazda MX-5 (the Miata name was added later) was first introduced in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. It was manufactured by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan to be a small, lightweight roadster with minimal mechanical complexity while also being technologically advanced and modern. Conceptually, the Mazda MX-5 was intended to be the evolution and spiritual successor to British sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s, the kind that you’d see James Bond driving in one of his classic films. The first generation of the vehicle was a best-selling hit, so Mazda then created a limited line of M2 limited editions that were more focused on performance.
After receiving even more acclaim and strong sales, the Mazda MX-5 continued its ascent into being one of the most popular roadsters. The vehicle’s design credo is known as “jinba ittai,” which translates loosely into English as “rider and horse as one body.” Today, the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata is available at our dealership, and it boasts a power-folding Targa top, an efficient and quick engine, and a classic sense of design and style.
