Safety has been a huge priority for all of us over the past year. While store and school closings and event cancelations have been tough, they’re a small price to pay for staying healthy.
If you’ve been at home, this means that you haven’t been using your car as much. It’s important to remember that it still needs service. Some tasks may not be necessary right now, but others definitely are. Oil changes cannot be forgotten just because you’re driving less!
Why You Can’t Neglect Oil Changes
Your car contains many different fluids that are generally fine even if the vehicle just sits in your driveway. These include the coolant, anti-freeze, and windshield wiper fluid. Oil, however, isn’t included on this list.
Eventually – whether it’s used or not – it will go bad. It degrades and loses viscosity over time as it sits. This will certainly affect your engine's performance and may even cause damage to parts. This is why oil has to be changed periodically.
Should I Still Stick to Mileage Intervals?
When should oil be changed? Every 3,000 to 6,000 miles, right? Sure, if you’re actually driving. If you hardly get behind the wheel, time is the more important factor. You should aim to have your oil changed about every six months, or twice per year. This will help keep your engine running well whenever you use it.
