With open-air excitement and a chic sense of style, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is truly a standout sedan. At Heritage Mazda Catonsville, we’re looking at the evolution of the sports car. It’s come a long way in its more than thirty years.

Original Debut

The Mazda MX-5 Miata originally debuted at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show. The first generation, known as NA, was officially released as a 1990 model. The two-passenger convertible was originally offered in red, white, or blue, and came equipped with a 116-horsepower 1.6-liter engine.

Second Generation

The second generation, known as NB, was released in 1999. It features new bodywork and a refreshed interior. The convertible ditches the flip-up headlights for fixed headlights and features a curvier, more substantial body.

Third Generation

In 2006, the third generation was introduced. The convertible was originally known as the Mazda NC MX-5 and later added the “Miata” back into its name. It now has an all-new unibody, making it larger and heavier. To offset the increase, it adds a 2.0-liter inline-four engine, which delivers up to 170 horsepower.

Power Retractable Hardtop Release

In 2007, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is now also available as a power retractable hardtop. The power-folding hardtop is heavier than the soft top, but still lightweight and seamlessly folds into roughly the same space.

Fourth Generation

The fourth generation, also known as ND, was released in 2016. It’s a lighter model once again and even shorter than before. Since it’s almost as light as the original, the 2.0-liter inline-four engine makes it the quickest Mazda MX-5 Miata yet.
