If you are like most people right now, you’re probably looking for ways to cut your fuel costs. One way to do this is with Mazda maintenance, as an overdue oil change can be a big help. But should you consider switching to E15 gas? Heritage Mazda Catonsville addresses this increasingly common question.

What is E15 Gas?

Most cars can run on regular gas, which has an octane grade of 87. This is also considered E10 fuel, as it contains up to 10% of ethanol. When you see the number 88 at the pump, this is E15 gas, and it has up to 15% of ethanol. While this is typically a little cheaper than 87, don’t get your hopes up just yet. What you save short-term is generally spent later in the form of lower fuel economy.

Other Reasons to Avoid E15 Gas

Along with reduced gas mileage, there are other negatives for your Mazda model when using E15 gas. First, the engine in your car isn’t designed to use it. The higher concentration of ethanol can corrode metal and lead to the deterioration of hoses and seals. Plus, if your car is under warranty, any damage caused by this gas won’t be covered.

What Happens if You’ve Already Used E15 Gas?

Accidents happen, and if you use 88 gas because it’s your only option at the moment, you don’t need to panic. Just one tankful of this fuel isn’t enough to permanently hurt your engine. However, we suggest diluting it with a better grade of gasoline once there’s room in the tank, and avoiding frequent or prolonged use.
